Better measurement can improve rehabilitation
REHAB-IMMERSIVE studies how virtual reality can support motor rehabilitation through more interactive exercises and more useful follow-up data. The project is connected to the University of Castilla-La Mancha and brings together virtual reality, artificial intelligence and clinical validation capabilities.
Its important contribution is not simply placing a screen in front of a patient. It is building a workflow in which an exercise produces information, that information is interpreted and a professional can adjust the intervention. For that loop to be reliable, motion capture and the immersive experience must align with a clinical measure that people can understand.
From movement to a useful signal
A system like this can record position, speed or repetitions of particular movements. Those signals need context: the same gesture may mean something different depending on fatigue, pain or a person’s starting ability. AI can help identify patterns, but it does not automatically turn a measurement into a diagnosis.
That makes the project’s clinical validation and functional tests such as Box and Block or GRASSP significant. The technology must show that its data is consistent and supports therapeutic decisions, rather than merely proving that an application works in a demonstration.
An architecture with clear boundaries
The architecture should separate interaction, data capture and analysis. It should also make clear which information is stored, for how long and who can access it. In digital health, an attractive visualisation cannot compensate for weak traceability or an inference that cannot be explained.
Virtual reality adds practical requirements as well. Latency, comfort, accessibility and motion-sickness prevention can determine whether a session is useful. Designing these systems means balancing immersion, safety and cognitive effort.
REHAB-IMMERSIVE represents a research direction with value for Castilla-La Mancha because it connects university capabilities with a concrete clinical need. Its progress will depend on technical metrics continuing to answer questions that professionals and patients can recognise.
